Honoring Our Gifts (19)I remember reading a novel when I was a kid. The story was about a young, wounded man finding his way through his life and yet always battling this evil which was always near and yet elusive. Towards the end of the story he is forced to name this evil. When it comes down to it he realizes that the evil is a part of him. His shadow.

Our shadow develops within the ego according to Carl Jung. It’s the part of ourselves we’re ashamed of because we hide, deny and repress it from sharing it with others. We feel shame and yet it is essential to our survival. The shadow takes care of things for us which aren’t provided by others. We develop this aspect of ourselves to ensure we survive. It’s our unconscious way of getting our needs met.

Honoring our Shadow:

The gift of the shadow is protecting ourselves as we grow and interact with the world around us. We would not be whole without our shadow. It seems so contradictory to think that something which can seem so ominous and foreboding could be so essential. Instead we get to continue to integrate and understand these parts of ourselves.

What has your shadow provided for you? How has it protected you?

Take some time to honor the gift of the shadow archetype.

How can you honor your Shadow today?

Simple ways to be grateful for our gifts. And of course, you don’t have to stick to our calendar – you can be grateful for anything that comes along today. This is just a prompt.

I’d love to hear what you are honoring today and how you are doing it. Check in with us and leave some comments.
